Default LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!!

hi,im about to have a hedgehog soon or later.it may be months or even years.heres the first question.
1.What cage can i get? is it ok to just make it a wired cadge? is it easy to get out? i know its probably a dumb question, but i think i should get a plastic like type of cadge were they put lizzards and snakes in.
2.can they only eat catfood?or anything else on the hedgie menu?no,its not chilli dogs.

3:what toys?is it allowed to be wooden?or would it hurt the hedgehog?
4:were can i get one extra cheap? does walmart sell them cuz on youtube i think someone said they were,or it was toys.
well the names obious ,im gonna name him sonic...but another question...
5.is it ok to take him out the cadge? what time?when to play?
thx!

1.Wired cages are really not recommended for them, i personally use a sterilite containers for my hedgie, there are plenty of threads about cages here:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1860

2. Using a combination of high quality cat foods is the most nutritional and you can supplement that diet with treats
the cat food list:https://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forum...c.php?f=6&t=15
treat list: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=60
3. Again there are plenty of threads about safe toys for hedgies, wooden toys ar enot recommended for them, there are plenty of other fun and safe toys for them

4. Getting one really cheap is questionable, unless you plan to adopt one from a pet rescue. You should try to find a reputable breeder in your area. It'll cost 100 bucks or more, but a healthy hedgie will save you from health issues later if you get it from a shady dealer...

5. You should take your hedgie out in the evening, they are nocturnal by nature, and will be grumpy when woken up during the day :P

Hope my post helped and the moderators here will be able to help you even more, welcome!

Raisin, where did you see that wire cages are not recommended? Plastic bottomed, wire topped cages are best cage option available as they allow plenty of ventilation and offer the most heating choices.

Hey Sonicthehedgehog!

Answering custion number 1:
My Hedgie Sid lives in a fish tank with wood shavings and a small box filled with fabric and he is very happy, there are a couple of toilet paper tubes for toys but mostly he just messes up everything.

Answering cuestion number 2:
Well no, they donīt only eat cat food they too should eat a live diet consisting mostly in insects hereīs a page thatīs super-helpful
http://wiki.hedgehogcentral.com/tiki-in ... ?page=Food
check the treats link too.

Answering cuestion number 3:
Well the thing is that hedgehogs are not roddents and they do not need to chew on stuff so if there is an interesting flavour on your wooden toy they MIGHT try it out and this can be bad for their teeth, a moderator could help you out better.

Answering cuestion number 4:
Well as I said in answer number 1 toilet paper tubes are grate and there is possibly nothing more cheap than that, they love them, you should see how your hedgehog entertains himself maybe heīs not interested in toys and maybe he is in climbing and exploring so as a toy you could place some ramps made out of cardboard which is cheap too.

Answering cuestion number 5:
A lot of owners say that hedgies are grumpy-like and they like to be mostly alone by nature but I got my hedgie about 10 days ago, i chose to be with him as much as i can because i didnīt want him to be grumpy so I take him out a lot during the day as well as during the night, I was planing to change a bit his cicle so I can play with him when i get back from school so i wake him up about 4 p.m. and feed him and then play with him so now he goes to sleep about 2:00 to 2:30 in the morning and he is very friendly and sociable. Iīd say take him out as much as you can!

The best of lucks i hope this post is helpful, remember this is just my experienece!
See you around!

CAUTION!!! TIRADE ABOUT TO START.

1.Aquariums are the absolute worst thing you could ever put a mammal in, THEY ARE MADE FOR FISH! They have almost 0 ventilation and most are way way too small. And you didnt mention if he has a wheel, if not then that is the reason he is destoying his cage, he is bored. I suggest doing research and getting a HEDGIE SAFE wheel A.S.A.P.

2. Well, YES they DO eat a diet consisting MAINLY of high quality cat food. Some hedgies wont even touch a live insect. Where did you get your info on diet? It certainly was not from this forum.

5. These are NOCTURNAL animals, and changing their cycle is not only NOT reccomended, it could also prove to be FATAL.

Honestly, you need to read more and not be giving any advice. You could cause someone to really hurt their hedgie.

Hey sorry Nancy, i was thinking about the ones with the wire bottoms and generalized them all into one category, i think i've seen you talk about having a ferret nation cage for some of your hedgies...which would be awesome, except they are so expensive, how would you change a cage like that into something suitable for a hedgehog...(and i've gone off topic lol)...

Hi and welcome...I just wanted to say that you've gotten some good advice here but please don't go with what SidVicious said. As Dorasdaddy pointed out alot of his advice is wrong and even dangerous. The rest of the posts are great advice
