Default Temperature and Behavior question Please Help!

Hey everyone today I got my first ever hedgie. He is so cute and precious my daughter named him Timber. But I had a 2 quick questions.

1) I didnt know I needed any heat sources for him. Which is fine I am ordering a CHE setup for Timber but what can I do til I get it. (I ordered the set up today) I was not paying $65 for the setup from the breeder I got her from which didnt include a thermometer. No offense against her or anything but when I seen the prices on amazon I wasnt going back to get the setup.

and 2) Every time he sees me or my daughter when we go check on him he goes into a ball. I mean I know he needs to get used to the place and us and our scents. But is going into the defensive mode normal? Will he stop? Thanks so much.

Keep him the room where the temperature is between 72-85 degrees, needs to be at ALL times.

The defensive mode is normal, it really depends on his personality, some hedgehogs will eventually get comfortable enough to not be balled up and others will always ball up and open up after a while or some will always ball up.

Just wanted to add, try to keep the temp between 72-80. 85 is getting too warm for most hogs, and some start getting too warm even by 80.

So just keep him in the warmest room til the heat lamp comes? Or is there something I can do to keep him warm in the mean time?

Warmest room may work - you should probably get a thermometer at a nearby store today or tomorrow so you can see what temperature his cage is actually at. Stores like Walmart, etc. should have pretty cheap digital thermometers, so it'd be worth buying one (just make sure it's digital and has a probe, since others aren't as accurate) to make sure the temp doesn't dip too low. If you've already ordered a thermometer online with the other things, then it doesn't hurt to have a back-up! You could keep it with a travel carrier or in the emergency supplies or something.

Depending on what temperature the warmest room is, you may need to bump up the house heat or get a cheap space heater from the store - whichever you'd prefer. Try to make sure the temp is at least 72-75, and stays relatively steady and that should keep him good until your stuff gets there!
