Arrow My baby hedgie is being mean to me :(

Hello. I am a new owner of my baby Mishka who is around 4-6 weeks old. I got her 3 weeks ago and she has being quite an explorer by walking around in my room and she eats fine. I got her a new cage yesterday and ever since then (until today 22/4/13) she has gotten very grumpy towards me. Whenever I want to pick her up, she'll start hissing and giving me signals not to touch her. She has never been like this before and it troubles me. I read in some few posts here which says she's on her grumpy quilling side? She has always been scratching and I think she's growing some new quills since I've checked her fur for some mites and found none. I would just like to know what's gotten into my friendly Mishka these days? Would very much appreciate for any replies.

it could definitely be quilling, since you say she's also scratching. Their backs get irritated when the new quills begin to grow in. Just keep handling her, be gentle with her, and wait it out. Giving her treats when she's out with you will probably help.

Is there anything i could do to ease her itchiness? Should I give her a bath? She woke up just now and had her meal and she was so grumpy whenever I tried to hold her and she crawled back into her comfy blankie to sleep in.

It could definitely be quilling. She is also quite young, saying you got her at only 1-3 weeks old? I dont know much about breeding/babies, but doesnt that seem young to take away from the mom?

Anyways, if she is quilling, the best thing is to be gentle. Still pick her up...dont let her scare you or boss you around because then she'll just learn bad behavior. But maybe she wont want you touching her back quite as much. To help, you can put her in a (VERY) shallow bath since she is so young and probably small, and put some oatmeal in it. I've seen others say that might soothe them (and help with any dry skin issues)

Also, you put her in a new cage..she may be unfamiliar with it. Again, she is VERY young, so little changes might stress her out. Even a cage change for an older hedgie might stress them out. That could also be related. But that is something she will get used to.

Hello Emily. Thank you for the very useful tips. My Mishka is 4-6 weeks old and I got her 3 weeks ago. Not 1-3 weeks old. You got that wrong. I wouldn't want to pet a hedgehog that young! Hehe.

She has been scratching and I can see white flakes falling from it and I am very sure there's no mites. I see some of her quills at the place she sleeps. Not more than 5. I treated her to carrots and she licks her back afterwards. I thought that means she's doing fine and after walking around the room for a few rounds, she decided to sleep again. I took her out from the cage to put her in her blanket and when I picked her up, she decided to sleep on my palms. I like when she does that, not her being very grouchy! Anyways, I will buy an oatmeal bath tomorrow and give her a light bath. And not to forget to STRINGMOUSE! Thank you for your tips as well! I hope Mishka will be fine tomorrow onwards

If she's 4-6 weeks right now... and you got her 3 weeks ago... that would mean that you got her when she was 1-3 weeks old. Which is too young to leave momma... If you got her at 4-6 weeks, then that would make her now 7-9 weeks. Which would be quilling age.

Ahhhh! All this numbers made me so confused. When I bought her, the lady said she's 1 and a half month which I assume would be 6 weeks! I forgot that she's growing ever since. She must be around 9 weeks old! Thank you for knocking some sense out of me. This is the right age for her to quilling! I feel more assured now. Is scratching part of it as well?

haha! You're welcome! Yes, Aeris scratched a LOT with quilling. Her skin got really dry and flaky, and everytime she scratched, I'd see quills fall out. I gave her an oatmeal bath every few days. No shampoo. Just some oatmeal in a sock swished in her water and then put the water on her back. Then I rinsed her with a cup of warm water with a little olive oil in it. It really helped a lot.

I would definitely try that tomorrow! I hope that could make her skin less irritated! Thank you very much for suggesting it!
