Default Is this normal hedgie behavior

My little SquishMitten has the habit of when we go to clean out his cage he will do a running bellyflop onto all his poop before we can get to it and it ends up in him having to take a bath because he has poo boots and its all over his body.
Is it normal for hedgies to be very protective over their poop?

Hmm.... I have never heard of that before, but I'm sure it is possible. Thimble only gets poop boots after running on his wheel all night.

Someone more experienced with hedgie behavior might help you more than me...

Hahaha! I can picture the belly flop now...

Could it be that when you reach into his cage to get him he tends to head in the opposite direction, which just happens to be where his poo is? I wouldn't think it would be a big problem (although obnoxious) since hedgies typically get "boot" baths fairly frequently anyway. If that isn't the case with SquishMitten and he is litter trained (or uses one general area), I think you've acheived the Holy Grail of hedgehog ownership and I am super jealous.

No we didn't try to get him out the cage at all at first and just went for the poop and he ran across the cage onto his poop.
And every time we went to go grab a piece of poop with the napkin he would sprint over there.

I can't really find anything on hedgehogs being protective of their poop.
Maybe squish is the only one

I"m not sure if it's normal but it certainly doesn't sound like something to be concerned about. I must admit I really laughed at the thought of a little hedgie sprinting to protect his poop's honor. Hedgehogs can be so...weird!
