Default What to check for?

Hi everyone! I'm getting my new hedgehog on Friday and I was wondering if anyone could tell me everything I will need to check for on my new hedgie? I know I should check for clean ears, eyes, mouths and noses but is there anything else that I would check for, I will be able to see the parent's and the other hoglets when I am there.
Thanks everyone,
Crystal x

Other than that, I would check the skin if you can. Look for dryness, flakes, etc. But if you're buying from a responsible breeder, you shouldn't have too much to worry about. Congrats on your new hedgie!

Other than noting that you should have an awareness of behavior and physical condition all the time (just an automatic monitoring), if you feel good about where the hedgie is come from I wouldn't worry either.

For checking the skin, I would use a toothbrush and gently brush/lift 'against the grain'. This will raise the quills easily and you should be able to get a good look. Truthfully, there's not much to see and until you are used to what to expect you won't know what you're seeing anyway. Ha!

The initial stages of dry skin probably won't show much. By the time you can see flaky or cracked skin, you will probably have seen the problem in behavior, e.g., inordinate scratching.
