Default New Hedgie!

After waiting since november I finally picked up a beautiful little boy pinto yesterday! But, despite doing tons of research I have a few questions about his behaviour!

Firstly, he stays in pretty much the same corner of his cage all the time, and seems quite reluctant to explore anywhere else, he also hasn't been on his wheel yet, is this normal? I know this is probably just because he's nervous in his new home but I just want to be sure.
Also, this might sound silly but his poos are really smelly, and he's very small for his age (8 weeks), I just want to make sure that this is normal and he's not ill?
His eating and drinking plenty though

Finally, he self anoints when he smells my scent, everyone seems to have a different explanation for this but I was just wondering whether this is a good sign or is it fear?

Thank you in advance!
xxx

Give him sometime to get use to his surroundings. What kind of food are feeding him? if it is a fish based cat food it can sometimes cause smelly poop.

i suggest adding another brand of food to his current in case the brand you feed him has a recall or changes the ingredents. I feed sonic 3 different brands and flavors he gets chicken, turkey and fish

What brand is it specifically? If it's a low quality food with a lot of fillers, that might be part of it. It also might be that his poop smells normally and you just need to get used to it.

For size, what are you basing that on? I would suggest weighing him regularly, at least once a week, with a digitial scale that measures in grams. As long as he's gaining weight at this age, there's nothing to worry about.

Congrats on the new baby.

It's iams, and from the same packet as he was eating before.
I only know he's small because the breeder said so, he's the youngest hedgehog I've met so I've nothing to compare it too!

Thank you for all the help

I suggest switching brands. I have not been a lot of people that feed iams. If I am not mistaken it has a lot of fillers like corn and meat by products.

Iams is not a recommended brand. I know a lot of people here suggest letting them settle into their new home for several weeks and then gradually switch over the food. As far as weight and size, Moxieberry said it all. Prim stays one one side of her cage most of the time and comes out ONLY at night to run. Some hediges take a little while to get used to their new homes. Give him a week or so to adjust before worrying too much
