Default Nails too soft to clip?

I'm back after a week or so away (not on vacation -- I just discovered that I have less time to post when I am back at work. Who knew)?

Anyway, my daughter and I gave Taffy her first bath today and it went OK. She was constantly trying to climb out of the sink, but she didn't seem stressed or nervous.

We tried to clip her nails for the first time after the bath, but with the combination of me being a little hesitant and the nails being very soft I did not have much success.

Was clipping post-bath a mistake or are soft nails the sign of something else?

Also, she may have lost a little bit of hair around her ears. Is that likely from dryness or any other concern?

Thanks for any advice.

I fairly new to hedgies too but I've noticed soft nails after bathing so I think its normal. Just make sure you use a nice sharp pair of clippers and it shouldn't pose a problem.

I've found that the back nails are softer and flatter than the front. They also grow quicker. I feel they are easier to cut down than the front ones. My Mimzy will squeeze her front claws into fists to make it harder to cut.

We always clip after every foot and belly bath (with a bit of quill brushing). Three minor baths a week, so usually just a couple of clips. (Full baths every three months.) I generally agree with momIImany's observations. Back nails do get softer. I believe that this is because they are typically larger and have more 'hollow' than the front nail, so they have some 'give' when they get soft. In fact, from time to time, we use the little 'file' part of the clippers to 'flick' debris out of the hollows. If the clippers are sharp, I wouldn't worry about it.

We use regular nail clippers, but a very small size; they are only about 1 1/2" long; much easier to handle than 'standard size' clippers. Some people use cuticle scissors; not a fan of them myself, but personal preference is probably the biggest factor.

Back nails definitely grow quicker, but keep on eye on the front nails because they tend to 'turn down', rather than 'grow long', and that's not something that you want to let get out of hand either.
