I've been using the Stay Bowl for my hedgehog (since other bowls he used to tip over). He is just a few months past 2 yrs old now...Recently, however, the food has been getting much more all over the place. He steps in his food bowl with poopy feet a lot of the food gets all over my floor. I was thinking about trying out a smaller automatic food dispenser for him instead. He has one that he uses for water and that seems to be working well. Is getting an automatic feeder a good idea for a hedgehog to eat from? He appears to be in healthy shape, knows not to overeat, but would just like ideas on how to get him to stop wasting so much food, and also for him to stop stepping in it after running on his wheel... You catch my drift... I appreciate any recommendations.

I don’t really know how automatic food dispensers work since we don’t have them in abundance here. But maybe you can share a picture of it? Then we can evaluate if it will be safe or not.
I got Igor, my boy, very low food bowls, which he can literally just bend over and eat out of it. Yes he steps in it with his poopy feet, but I haven’t seen that it could be an issue yet. Some hogs are just messier than others, if you really can’t stand the mess he makes, then we can help with other solutions. The dispenser seems like a solid idea. |

You want a feeder that you can empty, clean, and refill with fresh food every day. The kind you are asking about holds a fair amount of food so you wouldn't be throwing away the left over food every day. This can lead to bacteria growth in the bowl portion. Try to get a heavy ceramic bowl and only feed enough so that your hedgehog eats almost all of it in 24 hours. That way you can dump what's left and wash the bowl daily.
The water feeder needs to be dumped out and washed every day too. |
