Default Male or Female???

Everyone,

I'm going to be getting my first hoglet soon, sometime after 10/21, but not sure exactly when due to availability from the breeder. I was dead set on a female platinum, but a male has recently also come available. My concerns with the male if the non-stop humping, self-pleasuring/masturbating, and having to clean his messes from it. I have a 5 and 3 year old daughter and son and don't want to explain that stuff to them, or have to clean dried clumps of hedgie juice from his fur. My question is, am I overreacting about that stuff, or is it a legitimate concern and I should just wait it out for a female, platinum or other.

Thanks!

Some males are very clean about and you don't really know they ever actually have it. On a facebook I'm on everyone calls it boy time and cleaning boy juice.

Its not extremely hard to clean it just soak it off a tease it off using a damp cloth.

I believe they get to a certain age before they actually start having boy time anyway.
The dont tend to hump (from what I know) just self pleasure. And some don't do it non stop and others do. It highly depends on them.

Its your choice in the end. But people who have males and young children tend to make up something, they generally curl so some say he's just having a weird dream which is why he is moving weird/making weird noises.

There are cons to be both sexes, and ultimately depends on what youre willing to deal with;

With male hedgehogs, there is masturbation - some are cleaner about it than others, but from what ive seen, there is going to be at least a handful of times where they'll need some assistance with cleaning up afterwards. If that is not something you wish to deal with (totally understandable, by the way! Its one of the reasons I dont think I'd own a male haha), then do not get a male hedgehog.

With females, uterine cancers are fairly common. Hedgehogs are little cancer machines to begin with but with females, reproductive cancers are more common than they would be in males where testicular cancer is generally not heard of much. With that, comes the potential for added expense - spay surgeries aint cheap!

I always find this topic funny. Pick the hedgehog that is the friendliest and bonds with you. Don't worry about boy or girl. A hedgehog is a hedgehog. The only time you need to worry about sex is if you are keeping more than 1 and if you plan to breed. Otherwise pick the one that fits with you.

Thanks for the advice. With some local breeders, they ultimately have waiting lists, so it's not like I have the pick of 5 hoglets. Some are already spoken for, some are being kept by the breeder and what not.

I totally get where you were coming from. I was dead set on a female, but ending up adopting my boy, Theodore! I’ve never had a female, but Theodore’s almost a year old and I’ve never ever seen him masturbate or do anything like that. Maybe he’s just a clean boy. As for the anointing, Theodore doesn’t do it that often, and it dries right away. I wouldn’t worry about gender, but more about friendliness. If you’re worried about your kids just say he’s cleaning. Just chose the hedgie that’ll make your family happiest.

Good luck!
