Question Housing Male and Female Together

So, asking for a friend of mine because I'm a little confused.

I've done a good bit of research about a male and female being housed together, and it always states not to for obvious reasons. However, I have a friend who has housed a male and female together for almost 2 years now. Not once have they ever tried to mate, no babies have ever happened, nada.

I've read that females' heat cycles are 'activated', if you will, after having a male put in for a few days, then taken out, then put back in.

If that's true, then is it safe to assume that in a big enclosure of always being together, they're going to be okay?? I just worry about them, that's all. I'd appreciate any advice/information from the hedgehog central community.

Female hedgehogs do exhibit induced ovulation in the presence of a male. Housing males and females together are generally discouraged not only for unwarranted breeding but also because of aggression. Those two may be fixed and therefore won’t have babies, but males and females will generally only be together in the wild specifically to breed and aggression can definitely arise with males and females being housed together. The only time I’ve ever heard of a male and female together is when they were litter mates and both fixed, but I would still discourage it even if that was the case. They’re solitary animals and really have no reason to be housed together!

They definitely aren’t spayed or neutered, but they also have never shown any aggression. They have a pretty huge cage so I wonder if that’s why it’s somehow working out?

She wouldn't see them breed, they breed at night when alone. He's breeding her, she's having babies and then one of them is killing the babies as soon as they're born and cleaning up the mess. This is what happens over and over when males and females are kept together.

Oh wow, that’s kind of gruesome. There wouldn’t be any indication whatsoever in the cage???

I had a female miscarry a litter and never saw a sign of it in the cage. The only way I knew was I had a video camera on the cage and when I watched it I saw what happened. I looked again after I saw the video and still couldn't find any blood or anything in the cage.
