Default Potential new hedge hog owner couple questions

I have been considering getting a hedgehog for a while now and have a couple of questions before I commit.

I would like to keep the hedgehog in a 55gal aquarium I was once keeping fish. The aquarium has already been given a good cleaning and I have researched some general care, bedding, food, wheel etc.

The location of the aquarium is in the basement and this is where the questions come in.

Since my basement is dark the day, with only two small windows should I provide some sort of light for the hedgehog? If so what type of lighting would you recommend?

During the summer months temperature would not be an issue, however living in Canada during the winder months my basement is only about 69 farenheit. What can I do to provide the required heat to bring the temperature up for my hedgehog? Would an undertank heating pad provide enough heat?

I'd really suggest going with something besides an aquarium. They aren't designed to have much ventilation, and are designed to keep in moisture, which can lead to respiratory problems. They also can be a pain to clean because of the weight. I know a few instances of hedgehogs rubbing their noses raw against the glass of an aquarium/tank.

With that being said, yes, you'll need a light. Hedgehogs should have 12-14 hours of light per day which should be fairly consistent. Most people just use some sort of lamp with a timer.

For heating, heating pads aren't adequate because they don't heat the air very well. A CHE (ceramic heat emitter) or small space heater are the best options, other than keeping the whole room heated to the correct temperature.

You could buy a space heater but that can be a bit pricey. There are ceramic heat emitters for reptiles that can be attached to the cage with a thermostat to control the temperature. A heating pad could work depending on how cold it is. Maybe you can put the cage into your basement with a thermometer ( i am referring to a reptile thermometer that can stick to the side of the cage)to monitor how warm it gets. Hope I helped!
