Default Medication use quesrion

Hello everyone, my vet prescribed dermoscent for his skin. I noticed the product contains teetree oil. So I bathed him immediately. Does anyone know the toxicity of this oil? Has anyone else used this product for their hedgies?

Hey there! Tea tree oil is actually toxic to hedgehogs. Good thinking to rinse it off. I looked this medicatation up and it seems to be made for dogs. Though many medications designed for dogs can be used with many other species, the concentrations of ingredients are generally going to be much higher than needed for hedgehogs, which means it’s definitely not recommended if it has tea tree oil. What problem does your hedgie have that he was prescribed this? Do you use a small mammal/exotic vet or a general practicing vet?

I went to an exotic vet who wants us to do research and recommends this site for it. It’s the dermoscent for cats and to use half a dose. We don’t have many exotic pet vets in the city but I’m going somewhere new after this.

If you washed it off, it should be okay, just keep an eye on him because its possible it will still effect him a little depending how long it was on him.

Whats the problem exactly with his skin that he needed the medication. If its just dry skin theres a whole load of ways (that doesnt mean needing a vet) to help sort it
Anything else then best to go to a vet.

Thanks for the responses. The product was on maybe 15 minutes by the time I washed it off. Honestly I have no idea why she prescribed me this, she told me 2 weeks ago to use coconut oil. I’ve decided on flax seed. He had a huge mite infestation before I got him and lost a lot of quills. She caught me off guard and just added it at the end of our visit. I’m going to see another vet for a second opinion shortly.

Flaxseed oil should be used in food only. Coconut oil should be used for rubbing on theirs backs only (unless its cooked in with food) these are generally only used for dry skin.
