Default Hedgehog Nail

Hi, new member here, I have a year old Pygmy hedgehog, I checked on her just now and she had pulled her whole nail out by the look of it, I cut most of the other nails that she would let me, it looked like it has been bleeding but stopped now, she was running round on her wheel fine and in the bath but I gave her a footbath and not bleeding just looks really sore, what can I do? I have taken the wheel out for now but not sure what to do next? Need help ASAP, thank you 🙂

I've dealt with broken nails a few times over the years, typically with rescues who have weak nails and run or dig a lot to deal with the stress of a new home. The most important thing is to remain calm and administer first aid. Clean the area with clean water. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or anything like that. I use q-tips dipped in clean water to gently clean the area. You may find additional blood tonight, it happens.

Next, keep the cage as clean as possible.

Next, try to figure out what happened. Weak nails? Something wrong in the cage?

For the most part, ripped out nails will bleed a ton, it is very frightening, but they usually heal quickly and without need for extra treatment. Occasionally I'll swipe a tiny little dab of antibiotic ointment on the nail bed for a day or two, but honestly, these wounds usually heal fast.

Monitor the toe, if it starts to swell more, change color, etc, you'll need a veterinary visit as infection is of concern.
