Default Running on a wheel.....

Hi! I've had my little hedgie for about five months now and have noticed a slight change. When I first got Hazel's wheel it was quite but, over time it got a little rusty and you could hear her when she ran at night. Recently I have noticed that she seems to be running less than usual, to the point you can barely hear her anymore. It almost sounds like she dosen't run at all. When a hold her or play with her during the day she seems perfectly fine and happy. I was wondering if this is a problem I should be worried about or if I'm the only one with this problem?

What kind of wheel do you have? Are her nails long perhaps? Do you have a lighting schedule? What's the temperature of the cage?

As well as Squirtlesquirt's suggestions ~ If the wheel is a little rusty does it squeak when she runs/you spin it? Perhaps the sound it makes (if any) is stopping her from running?

Thanks for the suggestions- it's possible that her cage was to cold because we have been sleeping with our windows open lately. I will try to keep it warmer. What temperature should a hedgehogs cage be usually?

Do you have a heating system set up? The cage should be between 74-79 F and at a consistent temperature.

Please make sure to have a proper heating set-up, it's super important! Also do not use heating pads as a source as they burn hedgies. There is a sticky if you look around in the forums about heat setups.

Just beware the high prices pet shops charge for ceramic heat bulbs. I got a 2 pack of 150w ceramic bulbs(which is plenty strong for my tank)for $13 on amazon. They were literally 3x as much at any of my local private owned or chain pet stores.
