Default Really stupid question

Okay so my friend has a turtle tank with a heat lamp. I noticed that she had the heat lamp plugged into something else then in to the wall. So can I not just plug my CHE into the wall??

I'm not sure what you mean. Plug just the lamp into the wall? Yes, but then it won't turn off if it is too hot or turn on when it is too cold. You need a thermostat for that, and then the thermostat will plug into the wall.

Your friend would be using a thermostat to control the the heat lamp, this is what it is plugged into. It's dangerous to use a CHE without one as they can get hot really quickly and overheat your enclosure. By using a CHE plugged into a thermostat, you set it to the required temperature you want the enclosure to stay at and it will turn the CHE on and off as required.

Right, are you sure it was the heat lamp plugged into a timer and not a light lamp? A lot of people use timers to control the light lamps on cages. If they are using a heat lamp on a timer this is really dangerous, a fire hazard. Heat lamps, especially CHEs need to be used (plugged into) a thermostat to control it, to turn it off and on when it is required. This is not optional! An animal could be at risk of over heating and worst case a fire break out if the lamp over heats if left on too long. Please check with your friend and let them know.
