Red face First Hedgehog? Questions about what is normal?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum and new to being a hedgie mom as well.
I recently got an 8 week old hedgehog and he has been wonderful. I just have a couple of questions about what is normal and what isn't and if there is anything I can improve about his living situation.

What's good: He has been responding well during our interactions and play time. When he is awake, he is quite active and loves to sleep in our arms and is very social. He is quite an escape artist and definitely loves food and going through small crevices and cuddling.

What I'm not sure about: His cage is currently being monitored by a digital thermometer that is hanging by the middle of his cage. We turned off all air conditioning in the room and originally had a ceramic heat emitter 100 WATTS set up but the thermometer was reading the temp to 83 FARENHEIT and I believe the recommended temp is 73-78. We do notice it has been a little warm in the room so we decided to turn off the heat emitter for now as the temp is quite high and is staying that way. I know how important it is to have a regular temperate so I am wondering if this is okay as long as I am constantly checking his cage?

Another thing, he has been sleeping quite a lot. He sleeps during the day and most through the night but does get up every once in a while to grab a bite, a drink or change positions. We are trying to get him used to our schedule of play when we get home around 7-8 pm and play with him until around 12 midnight. We give him a regular light schedule with a lamp during the day as well as open light through the windows and leave him at pitch dark after play. But we just feel like he is sleeping a LOT. Is this normal because he is still a baby?

He poops + pees regularly but we notice that even if the lights are on or not, when he wants to sleep he finds places to hide himself like underneath fleece blankets etc.

Sorry for the abundance of information.
Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong!
Thanks.

Yes all of that is normal for a baby. Babies will sleep alot more and the older he gets the more active he will be. Just make sure that he is still eating and drinking throughout the night.

Turning off the heat is okay if you are checking the temperature in his cage. If it says relatively warm without the heat lamp then he should be fine, just make sure to check and also, make sure it doesn't get much hotter, hedgies can also get too hot and uncomfortable.

It is normal for him to hide under fleece, especially as a baby. It gives him a sense of security, keeps him warm, keeps it dark while he is trying to sleep etc. My hedgie is always in fleece unless he is awake and he's over 6 months. It's just his preference.

Hello and welcome! ^^
Just to add on from Blondie0530, most owners use a thermostat to control their heat source, you plug the CHE into it and it will automatically turn it on and off for you when the temp gets too low or hot (you set the thermostat to your required temp). It also has a thermometer probe (which I dangle alongside my digital thermometer probe) so can read the cage temp. But still use your digital one so you can see what the actual temp is and monitor yourself. Some thermostats actually have a dimmer control so if you find 100watts is too powerful you can lower the output, I think most just use a standard one though. You can buy them off amazon, it's definitely worth buying one especially with winter approaching.

Hope this helps . Sounds like you're off to a good start with your little hedgie ♡
