Default New baby!

Hi, everyone! I am pretty new here, but it looks like a great place for all my hedgie related questions!
I just bought a male hedgie 5 days ago and I wanted to make sure that I'm all good, and I also have a couple questions.
My cage is 28x22 inches with vertical bars (so feet don't get stuck) and I have an excellent wheel, igloo, great bedding and litter as well as a ton of food and water dishes (as he HATES the bottle!) and a decent sized litter box (which he took to the very first day, to my great surprise). I also have a little play pen and a bunch of cat toys and tubes that he likes to play with. I am using the food that the store had until I can get him to eat a blend of a bunch of low fat, high protein cat foods. Does my set up seem okay for the little guy? He is about 7-8 weeks old (I was shocked at the store- I though they weren't weaned until at least 8 weeks??) and is pretty small because he can comfortably fit in the palm of my hand when he's rolled up.
Also, how much food should he be eating? He only started to eat 2 days ago, and I've been giving him 20-25 pieces of food each night. He drinks a small amount of water but not a lot. Also, is it normal for him to stay curled up in the same spot for the whole day until he comes out at usually 9:30-10:30? Thanks a million and sorry for such a long post!

That sounds pretty good! Maybe post a pic? And he's probably just scared and will come out later. You should probably give him about 2 tbls of food, a couple mealies and about gerber meat sticks/unseason chicken, or cottage cheese (google which kind to use) My breeder also recommends insectivore diet which is available for sale at ecoexotics.net. Hope I helped! It also sounds like you bought from a pet store...? If so I would take it for a vet check up just in case. But if you did buy from a breeder then ask them how much food to give.

Thanks, that helped a ton! I did buy him from a pet store, however here in Canada (or at least in my city) it's required to give all animals that they sell a check up before being sold, so they said he was all good! I'll get a pic up as soon as I can, but he is being a little picky right now as he is in the middle of quilling, I think.

Even if the pet store has said they had him checked, it might give you piece of mind to have him checked yourself by a vet. Where in Canada are you? Maybe one of us Canadians on here can suggest a vet for you. What type of wheel are you using? What are you using as bedding and litter? Do you know how old he is? Do you have a lighting and heating source for him?

Congrats on your new hedgie! Free feeding hedgehogs is normal, just make sure that the bowl isn't empty or too much is left over. I would hold back on giving him treats that he hasn't had before for now. Yes, it is normal for them to sleep for long periods of time as a baby, mine still does.

I believe that babies are weaned around 6 weeks, but don't quote me on that because I'm not a breeder. I also think they can be placed in homes after 6 weeks if they are healthy. I got my male hedgehog at 8 weeks old and he was already separated from his mom.

kcgirl, I am unfamiliar with ecoexotics, what is in that particular insectivore diet?
