Default Help?

So my 8 month hedgehog keeps itching and scratching. I think she's past the quilling months so I'm confused. I got her 4 days ago and her skin is really red and look irritated. It took me forever to find a vet that sees hedgehogs but I finally found one and we have an appointment on Thursday. She bites a bit when I let her sniff my finger. And she hisses and jumps when I try to touch her. She eats and drinks a good amount. I'm getting her a wheel on Thursday as well. I got her a big cage and a nice hut. Is there anything else I'm missing? I'm just mostly wondering if the hissing is normal because of the new environment. And if the itching and reddish skin is also normal???

She definitely needs to see the vet. Someone here may have more experience with the skin but that doesn't sound good.
As for the hissing, that is normal. What time are you getting her out to hold her and talk gently to her? Also a few fleece squares with your scent in her hut will help her know you are a safe smell. The bites may just be exploratory, but if they are bad bites I would check the sticky in hedgehog behavior on biting.
Do you have a heating and light set up? You'll need a thermostat and a heat source, most people use something called a ceramic heat emitter, or CHE. You need the bulb and a dome rated for CHEs. The thermostat will turn them on and off as needed. Depending on how big the cage is, you may need more than one, as you want the entire cage to be the same temp. A 10inch dome is best, with usually a 150 watt CHE working well, but if you can't find a 10inch I have 2 8 inches that do the trick with 100 watt bulbs. A good temp is at least 73 degrees, 73-76 works. My guy likes it hot so he's at 79 but I would let your girl get adjusted and see how it works. Let us know if you need help!! And check out the other areas and topics for more info. Just remember, start a new topic if you have questions many of the threads are years old!! Welcome!
