Hedgehog at night!
I just got a new hedgehog and I love her! I want to play with her at night but I don't know how much light I should leave on. I keep one closet light on in my room but its not really enough to see her, but when I turn on a lamp she just buries herself in the bedding! How do you play with your hedgehog at night!?

Re: Hedgehog at night!
You honestly just have to get use to the dark. Light = sleep time for hedgehogs. Some hedgehogs are okay with a bit of light, but other aren't. It seems like you have one who wants it completely dark.

Leave your lights on, but keep it fairly dim. It doesn't have to be dark. You can also use a red light. Some hedgehogs are active under red light.

Get her used to a bit of a schedule and she will then be used to you getting her up in the early evening with lights on. Although some are far more active as soon as lights are out, most will get used to you having them up in the evening with lights on. :)

I've always had lights on when handling and cuddling with my hedgie. Some will just want to sleep under a blanket on my lap or in a hedgie bag, but that's still bonding. Alot didn't seem to mind the light as long as I waited till evening to take them out. I still have a couple that will come out during the day if they hear me in the room.

Re: Hedgehog at night!
I keep all the lights on when handling my hedgie. That way, I can see where quills, poo, and the hedgie all go :). Hedgie quills on furniture or the carpet can hurt when you are not expecting it. I try to handle them in the same place (different lap/floor pad) that way, I can vaccum after I put them up.

I also try to have music or noise going when I have them out. When I say out, I mean hedgie bag or lap pad. I have a one yr old little boy, so noise seems to be a constant. I figure it's better they get use to it from the start verses later on.
