Default Temporary Hedgehog Housing?

I will be a first time hedgehog owner this Saturday! I am so excited, but am running up against a problem.

After tons of research, I made up my mind to make a C&C cage for my new hedgie. I drove around my town for two hours today searching for cubes to make the cage, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, WalMart, KMart, and ended up with nothing. It was super frustrating, and I ended up just ordering the cubes online. They won't be here until maybe Thursday next week, but I have to pick up my hedgehog on Saturday! Any suggestions for a temporary cage for the little guy? (Don't worry, I already have everything else he will need, I just figured it would be easy to pick up some cubes!)

I am leaning towards a bin with wire mesh across the top and maybe some holes drilled along the bottom for extra ventilation. I don't want to have to put a ton of time into modifying the bin, since it will only be his home for a week or less.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I would really love some advice. Thank you!!

I think a plastic bin with wire grating across the top should be fine until you get your C&C assembled. Just make sure the lid is secure and can't be pushed off (hedgies are surprisingly good escape artists). The wire top will also allow you to put a CHE lamp on top for heating, if that is what you have for a heat source.

Thank you! I do indeed have a CHE for heat. I wish I had known with enough time to spare how hard it would be to find the cubes around here, but ah well, I suppose I will have to do the best I can with what I have. Thanks for the input, glad to hear it should work.

I'm surprised you had a hard time...I walked right into Bed, Bath and Beyond and found mine!

One other thing, do you have a thermostat to plug the CHE lamp into?

Believe it or not, those cubes are seasonal! You can find them everywhere during the back to school time of year (all those college students need cheap, modular storage), and you can't find them basically any other time. Hence why you had a hard time.

The storage bin idea is probably the way to go, especially since it's temporary. You might consider taking the time to make it nice, just in case you have to travel with your hog one day. It would make a good travel cage.

Yup, I have a thermostat and a thermometer. I have a 10 inch lamp with a 100 watt CHE bulb.

I thought getting the cubes was going to be easy too! Haha. Well, now I know to stock up come August.

I like the idea of having the bin as a travel cage. I will probably end up putting in a good effort to make it nice, I have a hard time being done with a project until it's"perfect." The bin cages seem fairly easy to make at least.
