You can also go to a fabric store. What's nice about fleece is that it doesn't unravel at the edges, so you can cut fleece to the appropriate size and that's all you need - no sewing required, and no worries about loose threads that could catch on a hedgehog's foot.

1 or 2 layers are adequate, it just depends on personal preference. People who want two layers will cut a piece of fleece twice as long length-wise so it can be folded over when it's put in the cage.

I recommend not cutting to the exact size of the cage's bottom, but leaving a few extra inches - the edges will curl up against the walls, and it makes it so the liner can be shifted around a little and still fully cover the bottom of the cage. So say if the bottom of the cage is 30" x 20", cut the liner to be something like 32" x 22". (For a fold-over double-layer liner, it would be 64" x 22" or 32" x 44".)

If you're in the US, Joann's is a fantastic store - the fleece is pretty much always discounted at least 30-40%, and there are often sales. Right now there's actually a weekend sale that gives 25% off your entire purchase. They also have a large assortment of different patterns and designs. http://hosted.where2getit.com/joann/ is the store locator.

My cage for Archimedes is fairly big (about 39" x 16" on the floor of it) - a yard of fleece from Joann's, which typically costs around $6, is enough for me to make two liners with plenty of scraps left over.

Other than that, Walmart has basic fleece, mostly just solid colors. You can also do something like buy a cheap fleece blanket and cut it up as needed.
