Default Shopping List

I did a search before posting this, and either I didn't search for the right thing, or there wasn't a post like this. I'm trying to get a shopping list together of things I need for my new hedgie. Here is what I have. Please feel free to add.

Cage Liners
Food (I'm going to feed Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain-free Adult Indoor Cat food mixed with Innova Low Fat Adult Cat food)
Food Bowl
Water Bowl
Corner Litter Box (I"m going to use Yesterday's News in it)
Igloo and/or Sleep Sack
PVC Pipe (4 in diameter?)
PVC Frame for Holding Liner Down
CHE Bulb, Lamp and Thermostat
Thermometer for Inside the Cage
Timer for Lamp in Room (to simulate day/night)

You have a great list going! Other things you might want to get:

A kitchen/postal scale for weighing your hedgie
Any additional cleaning supplies you might want (scrubby things, vinegar, etc)
Hand warmers for traveling
A hard sided cat carrier

And don't forget to have a couple hundred $ set aside for vet bills so they don't sneak up on you.

I have a cage, food and water bowls, an igloo, a litter box, and a toy now! That much closer!

I started with a corner litter box, but I've had much more luck with a litter tray placed under the wheel. If I did it again I would skip the corner box.

I would also start with some fleece strips or squares for him to hide under or drag into the igloo.

How about a little nail clipper? We use a human one on Pearl but I've heard people say it is easier with a small animal nail clipper. (?) Also, you may want to think about putting some things together for a little first aid/emergency kit. There is a thread somewhere with recommendations listed.

Also unscented laundry detergent to wash the liners and snuggle sacks.

And crickets/mealworms if you want to feed them.
Sounds like you will be ready!!!

I actually find human cuticle clippers to be the best choice for cutting their nails. I also agree with sublunary - a flat litter pan under the wheel is the best way to do it. Corner litter pans can sometimes work, but a pan under the wheel seems to have the highest success rate, and you'll want one regardless because poop and pee will run off the wheel.

Also, in my experience, it's great to have several hideaway options. You should definitely get a sleeping bag in addition to whatever hard-sided 'house' type thing you're getting (igloo or whatever; we opted for something else). I would recommend several of those, since you'll probably be washing them about as often as you wash liners. Archimedes currently has four.

I already have 3 igloos that I've used for my rats, but they prefer sleeping in their hammocks than on the cage floor, so my hedgie will inherit those. And I already own a tiny pair of pet nail trimmers from my rats, and I have stypic just in case. I also keep Chlorohexidine (sp?) on hand for injuries, as well as plain neosporin without pain relief. I use All baby detergent or Nature's Miracle detergent for my critters. It's hit and miss if you can find the NM detergent here locally. I was going to wait until it gets closer to get the mealworms... They would probably be dead by the time the little guy got here. I ordered the wheel today!
