Default Newby Hedgie Owner Needs Help

HI! My daughter Alannah just got a 12 week old Hedgehog who's name is Jagger. I have a few questions. Jagger sleeps on a heating pad for humans. I check it daily and it feels warm, but not too warm. Is this okay? I'm starting to wonder because he is pooping and peeing where he sleeps (which is runny, but have read this is okay because of age?!). We have a space heater in Alannah's room that reads/stays about 75-80. His therm. in his cage ranges from 71-74. I am thinking about getting a heat lamp. Would that be better? He is not very active, but I have read that they sleep a lot when they are young. He's eating well. Loves his bugs!
Thank you!

They do sleep a lot when they're young, but a heating pad isn't a good main source of heat. It's only heating the floor, not the air of his cage. I would suggest getting a CHE set up and making sure his cage temperature stays around 73 or a little above. Does he have a wheel and run on it? Usually they'll potty on their wheel. Babies do sometimes go where they sleep though, until they get adjusted to their new home.

Make sure you have a safe wheel and are feeding him the right food.

Check out our stickies for heat set ups. CHEs are the best for heat sources; heat lamps are not. Hedgehogs need heat 24/7, they need light 12/7.

CHE stands for Ceramic Heat Emitter, it's a type of bulb you can use in a lamp with a ceramic socket (think the ones used for reptiles and you'll have a good idea).

The stickies should have good info once you understand the terms and acronyms ^_^ I've been there, and it gets easier
