Default When should I start to pet my hedgie?

Hello! I just recently started to socialize with my hedgie. He's of course already pooped on the shirt I'm using to hold him (that has my scent) before I feel more confident to hold him from his quills. Though I will ask, every time I want to pet his quills to let him know I won't hurt him, he of course curls up and hisses at me. I know why he does this but I'm wondering when it would be the best time for me to be able to pet him without getting hurt too badly and when to stop using the shirt to pick him up.

Some honestly hate being petted on their quills. How old is your hedgie? Is he quilling? Sometimes petting can be uncomfortable if they're quilling.

I still pick mine up with a shirt, he is a grump when I first take him out. Over time you will find that your hedgie will start to unball quicker and make handling a bit easier. But all in all picking up with a shirt can continue if your hedgie won't allow you to scoop him up.

I just received him about a week ago, right on the 31st. He's a year and a half old and has had two previous owners. He used to be with a boy before he couldn't watch over him due to his job and then a family had him for a week for their daughter for Christmas. I saw him on Craigslist and brought him home since. He hasn't been too bad but I know he's still nervous around my house due to me having several dogs and a couple of cats (the cats don't bother him at all and two of my dogs usually leave the cage alone).

Two things I thought may help, when your hedgie is in your lap, you can try resting your hand on his back. Once he gets used to that, you may be able to try little pets. It could take a while to get him used to is. My Pepper still doesn't like to be touched too much.
You can also try & distract him with a mealie or treat. That's worked a bit with Pepper, give her a mealie & then a quick, soft pet.
