Default New hedgehog owner, few questions!

Hey guys I got my first hedgehog 2 days ago and I just have a few questions, sorry of they've been answered already on the forums!

1. The breeder had him on kit and kaboodle and gave me a small bag, From what I've been reading this isn't the best food for the hedgie, what should I start to feed him?

2. How often and how many crickets should be fed?

3. Is it okay to wake her up during the day?

4. She huffs and puffs when I try to pick her up but then she relaxes, is this normal?

5. Any other tips?

Thanks guys!

Congrats on your new baby! Pictures?! lol

1) Continue feeding him that and slowly start switching him over to a better quality cat food. I use chicken soup for the cat lovers soul light and blue buffalo.
Only introduce one new food a week. Hedgehogs have sensitive stomachs and if you don't you will see lose green stool.

2) Crickets are low in fat you can feed about 4-5 every day I'd say. Maybe more I personally don't feed crickets. They hop around and I wouldn't want one lose in my room. And I wouldn't leave them in the cage. Crickets bite.
You can also feed mealworms and dubia roaches. But like I said before one new food a week. If your changing her over to the new cat food just hold off on the treats.

3) she'll be grumpy. Every once and a while is okay. But it's best to leave them alone till night. Would you want to be woken up at 3am by someone? You rather be woken up at 8am.

4) Yup perfectly normal. Could take some time for her to get use to you. You can start by putting a used tshirt in the cage that you no longer want. It will have your smell and she'll associate it with safe. Also try and keep a routine. That helps. Just remember 30mins every night. And don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. Like I said. Could take a while.

5) Do you have a light and heating system? If not those are important. Also fleece bedding is the best type of bedding. And does she have a wheel? And fish tanks are bad cages. (Just somethings I say to new hedgie owners )

Also. In the beginning you said "him" then later you said "her" do you need help identifying the gender? =o -just checking-

Thank you for all the help! She's a girl, I was just typing from my phone and didn't realize I said "he". The lights in my room are on most of the day and if they're off there is sunlight that comes in. I have central air/heat and the vent is right next to the cage. I just got her a wheel today so I'll see how she likes it when she comes out tonight! Here's a pic I got of her, I'll try to get more soon!

Personally I love feeding crickets because you can gut load crickets. Gut loading is feeding the crickets healthy veggies and fruits a few days before feeding the crickets to your hedgie. By doing this you sort of pass on the nutrients to him/her. I do not feed live crickets because of the escape problem. I gut load for three days and then freeze them overnight in the freezer. This will kill them. They only take 10 minutes to thaw. I feed about 7 a night because Marvin is young and growing. I hide them around his cage so he can be entertained finding them. Anything he doesn't find I throw away in the morning.

Be careful having your hedgie next to a vent. It can create drafts which will eventually lead to respiratory infection or other problems.

yay picture!!! so cuteee x)

Sunlight doesn't work as light because as the days get shorter the hedgehog thinks winter is coming and try's to hibernate(hibernation very bad). That's why u need a pretty exact lights go on at 6am or 8am off at 6pm or 8pm or whatever works for u.
As saId above becareful of drafts. Expecially in the summer it's going to be freezing by her cage when that ac kicks in.. Which also means hibernation :/

I use crickets that are already dead from the pet store so much easier they come in a can & the only ingredients are the crickets themselves, my hediges love them and there's no mess, just refrigerate the leftovers!
