Default No Food During the Day

Hello! My hedgie I've had for a month, Mr. Pricklesworth, doesn't seem to ever want to eat during the day. What he does is sleeps all day, wakes up around midnight, eats a huge amount of food, then goes to bed after running around for about 6 hours. So, he sleeps about 18 hours a day. He's pretty chill, just sleeps wherever he is. Now, I want to give him mealies and other treats to help our bonding, but unfortunately, he never eats during the day. Even if i catch him right before he eats his one meal at midnight, he doesn't want to eat from my hands. What do you guys suggest? Will he ever want to eat from my hands?

Its actually suggested not to hand feed a hedgehog, they tend to start mistaking your fingers for food which can lead to nipping or biting of your hand. Mealies you can place right in their food dish, or depending on the cage can even be hidden for the hog to find. Besides that, sounds like your little guy is doing great.

Mr. Pricklesworth is such a cute name! Post pics of the little darling if you can

I usually just place a few mealies in Petunia's food dish with her kibble. Sometimes I'll give her one or two with a pair of tweezers, and now she gets excited whenever she sees the tweezers come near her!

I do the same with the mealies, I usually just put them in a little dish If I have them out for bonding time I have a plastic spoon that I use to give them. I've seen how just the sight of the spoon creates a frenzy and would be afraid what my fingers would look like if I use them lol

If you still want to do it though it can take time, hedgehogs can be really defensive. Sometimes they will come out of it but some may never.

I love his name, congrats on your new hedgie

Thanks for all the info everyone! I would take pics of him, but for some reason my new camera is broken as soon as it's fixed, I'll get some up!

Again, thanks for all the info
