Default Balling up

Olly is 4 months old and when I first got him 6 weeks ago he was friendly and awesome. For about the last week has been super huffy and just stayed balled up. He won't play at all. It's like a 180 in his personality and behavior. I want my friendly olly back. I don't know what to do. I've tried snacks meal worms his bonding pouch. Nothing. Help!

Have you noticed any quill loss? It's very possible he's quilling, which is painful & makes them grumpy. Has there been any change in his environment?

Yes he is losing quills. But that was happening before he's change in personality so I didn't know if it could still be quilling. And they are healthy quills with the bulb at the end. No change in his environment. He has his heat lamp, temp at 78 to 81, food water, cuddle house, wheel. I think I'm doing everything right but he has hated me for the last week.

Would his personality change this much from quilling? All he does is huff and shake and ball up. If he comes out of his ball a little as soon as I move he balls right back up. I keep taking him out and putting him on a blankie on my lap. He used to be so loveable. Crawling all over me

Sounds like quilling then. He probably didn't get grumpy right away because he was just losing quills - now he's growing new quills in, so he has lots of little needles stabbing through his skin. He hates the world right now, understandably! You can try giving him an oatmeal bath to help soothe his skin, it helps some hedgehogs. Otherwise, just hang in there & try not to pet his quills much. It'll take a couple weeks for him to get through this, and hopefully he'll calm back down afterwards. He just needs a little patience and sympathy right now.

Okay. I hope so that's what his breeder told me too. It just so upsetting. I love my little guy to death and I want him to be happy. And he's not. I can't do anything to make him happy. what's gonna happen to me when I have human children if I'm this upset over my hedgie baby. Gosh...

Our Gilbert did this! He was super happy, loving people the first few days we brought him home... Then, he got what I called pissy pants. I think he was quilling. He's back to a fun loving happy guy
