Default New hedgie owner, new hedgie with long nails. Clip or wait?

I just brought my first hedgie home a couple of days ago. I adopted her from someone who could no longer keep her. We're still getting to know each other, but she looks like she's got some fairly long nails that need a trim. I take her out for bonding time every night, and I've been trying to keep that as positive as possible. I've given her a couple of foot baths, which she does not like very much, and she's huffy and hissy with me when I first pick her up, but other than that our time together is going well. My question is, do I risk damaging that trust and go ahead and clip? Or, should I wait a few more days? I'm pretty sure she's not going to be a fan of the nail clipping.

In my personal opinion, I think you should go ahead and at least clip the longest ones. It will probably take at least a month or two for you two to be on stable ground as far as your opinions of each other and trust and you definitely can't wait that long.

Try not to stress over it and make the setting as calm as possible. I try to do nail clipping when my hog is tired and starting to relax on my lap. There are lots of helpful threads for nail trimming in the health section.

Congratulations on your new hedgehog! You can clip her nails, it may be tricky though. also make sure her feet are clean before you do, don't want anything hiding the quick. She will love it if you reward her after with some mealies, crickets, or whatever she likes It helps if you just take him out of the cage, before he gets interested in things around him. also kudos to you for taking in a hog in need of a home!

Well, we made our first attempt at nail cutting. I tried to clip a nail or two while she was in her foot bath, but she was having none of it. Then, I tried having my husband hold her in a towel while she was somewhat balled up, and eventually I was able to take a tiny bit off of a couple of nails while she was like that. She wouldn't unball and be still long enough for that to work again. I tried to get a fleece blanket under her belly to lift her up, but she wriggled right out of that. Finally I decided to just let her sit with me for a bit, and I was able to nip off a tiny bit more off on back foot. I decided to stop there. I think we're going to have to try again each night until they're all done.
