Default New kid question - Is it too late to start bonding?

Hey guys!

I'm a new kid, here at Hedgehog Central. I have a little guy named Widget. I'm not even sure how old he is (if any tips to check, all help is welcome!) because I got him from an evil pet store. So, it hurts me to say I've been a terrible Mommy since I've had him. I got him back in March, and I've barely socialized with him. At first, I would take him out every day, but after, I would take him out MAYBE every 2 weeks. It's no surprise that he doesn't like me all that much yet. But I have been taking him out for about an hour every day for the past 4 days. My question is: Is it ever too late to start bonding with your hedgie? Will he ever grow on me, even though I've had him 7 months with minimal play time?

Hello and welcome to HHC,

I think it depends on the hedgehog really. If you really want your hedgehog to bond with you, expect to be taking your hedgehog out every day. Not being socialized with for months doesn't really help the situation much. You have to keep persistent in order for your hedgehog to get to know you better and know that you're friendly and won't hurt (no easy task for some hedgehogs). After not being socialized, it is going to take time. This could be a matter of days, weeks, months or over a year... nobody can really tell, but if you're persistent you should slowly see progress.

As for age, is your hedgehog the same size now as when you first got him? If so, then he's probably at least a year old by now. Other than that I'm not really sure.
