Default the first pickup

hi all
I'll be bringing home my new hedgehog on Friday and am counting the days! I was going to call him Oliver, but the more I looked at his photo, he looks more like a Heathcliff
I plan to follow the great advice I got here and leave him alone for the first day...I thought of putting a worn t-shirt in his cage so he'll get used to my scent...
If he is frightened the first time I pick him up should I go ahead anyway, or will it stress him out if I force it?
Where would us newbies be without you guys

Congratulations. I bet you can't wait!

If you back off when he huffs, then he will learn that huffing will make you go away. Just go in, scoop him with two hands and hold him for a bit. If he seems really distressed, then put him in a hedgie bag or under a fleece on your lap or on your chest. If he still seems distressed after several minutes, then keep the visit short and try the same thing again later. Gradually increase the visits. If he happens to bite, remember to not put him back right away or he will learn that, that will make you go away and he can be back in his cage.

Best wishes. I'm sure more people will have some great advice!

I'm so excited for you!!

He will probably be frightened. YOU will probably be frightened. And you should probably hold him anyway.

It's a grand adventure you setting out for. It WILL get easier. Be patient, consistent and kind and you will do wonderfully.

I'm so excited for you!
