Post Yoshi is home :)

I'll post pics when he is out and about more! But I have a few questions. I brought Yoshi home friday and let him be. He went in his house and slept all day. Saturday I went to the fair and after I came home he was still sleeping, this time under a piece of fleece lol. He woke up and crawled on my hand and sniffed it. Then walked away and fell back to sleep.

First worry- His water bottle. The breeder says he uses a water bottle, so I got one of those. But when I touch the little ball thingy, hardly any water comes out. So I put a bowl of water in there too. Is that okay?

Second worry- His food. I got a bag of food from the breeder that he uses...here is the analysis:
Taste of the wild Rocky Mountain:
Guaranteed Analysis
Crude Protein (min) 42.0%
Crude Fat (min) 18.0%
Crude Fiber (max) 3.0%
Moisture (max) 10.0%
Zinc (min) 120 mg/kg
Selenium (min) 0.4 mg/kg
Vitamin E (min) 150 IU/kg
Taurine (min) 0.15%
Omega-6 Fatty Acids (min) 2.8%
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (min) 0.3%

isn't 42% way to high?? After this bag is gone, should I switch him?? I was thinking 42 percent might be ok for now since he is young...but is it too high??

I put 50 kibbles in his bowl, he ate 40 of them And this morning I saw one poop on his wheel, so that must mean he was using it!

The breeder said he has never fed his hedgehog meal worms. Should I stick with that?? Or should I introduce meal worms in sometime?

Also! I haven't set up the heating element yet. The cage has been a constant temp of 77. I am worried the heating will make it too hot.

Yeah you can use a water dish and its preferred for the most part. That food protein and fat content is way to high. I would slowly try and switch his food to something more suitable or at least wait a week, I guess it all depends on how much food you have left. Just because the breeder didn't use meal worms doesn't mean you cant, I would say go for it. Just make sure to get the regular size ones. For the heating It's always good to have just in case, 77 is a good temperature but come winter it may get colder so it wouldn't hurt to get one.

Yea I have the heating element ready if I need to use it! And I bought a 15 lb bag from the breeder, so I have a feeling it will last awhile However, I could try selling it on craigs list??? I will stick with the food now for a little while, but I think I will switch. Plus, I can't even find taste of the wild where I live.

Hello,

For the most part people agree 42% is to high I will note that a lot of very reputable breeders use foods with higher protein for their herd and have found success keep in mind there is so much we don't know about a hedgehogs needs that we just play it safe with a 35% Protein (Max) / 15% Fat (Max) Recommendation.

Meal worms and crickets are great especially crickets if you can use your bath tub to let loose some of the live ones and your hedgehog can hunt them I think it really stimulates them to have that sort of thing in their domestic life.

A water dish is preferred by most here because its a more natural drinking position for the hedgehog and personally we feel you should change the water each day for a hedgehog so it stays clean. This is more difficult if you have a messy hedgehog and aren't using fleece of course due to bedding getting in the water. However there have been known times where the ball has cut the hedgehogs tongue off or they have chipped teeth and others have had no trouble with them. For the most part here we figure better safe then sorry

I would recommend a CHE setup especially going into the fall/winter months households as a whole tend to drop in temp over night and you want to keep the temp. as stable as possible to prevent hibernation.

Another factor is providing 12-14 hours of light to their cage to tel them its sleepy time and keep their minds from thinking the days are getting shorter.

Also don't wait until the bag is gone to switch you want to get it now so you can slowly work the new food in without disrupting their tummy too much.

With one hog I think it would be impossible to use the 15lb bag of food before it expires. So I would go ahead and get new food within the recommend guidelines. Maybe the breeder will take the food back. Or you could always donate it if the money isn't that big a deal.
