Default eye surgery

Hi everyone,
Tiko gets eye surgery tom. Morning. He is losing his left eye due to an infection that meds just didn't control. Does anyone have experience in the aftermath of surgery? I'm afraid our.bonding has been disrupted bc I haven't been able to handle.him often other then when giving him.meds bc he is so uncomfortable and huffy. It's aweful and I feel terrible.for him I hop he doesn't hate me after this. It's gonna be about another week before I can really handle.him again.

If doc doesn't give you pain meds, ask him for some. Metacam works wonders to help keep them comfortable post surgery. Also ask for some hills a/d and feeding syringes. Its best to have these on hand just in case he decides to stop eating.

Why is it going to be a week before you can handle him? I have held all of my post-surgery hedgehogs (including one that had a tumor removed from behind his eyelid and had his eye sewn shut for a while because the eyelid needed time to heal so that he could blink with it again). Is your hedgehog overly defensive or scared of you still? You do have to keep them calm, but I have always just held them in their snuggle bags. Even a skittish rescue who had massive surgery (incision ran from her back leg to her first nipple) to have a mammary tumor removed right after coming to my home was happy to lay on us post-surgery.

He was on metacam for the pain before the surgery and to try to make him stop scratching at the eye.
The doc didn't say I "couldn't", he just said I should leave him be for about a week.
Tiko is very upset with me the last week but no, he is def not over defensive or scared of me at all on a normal basis. He is my buddy ya know!?
I guess if he wants to come out I will take him out, but if he seems to wanna be left alone, then it is what it is. thank you

Mine enjoy being with me, and honestly I think all have liked laying on me after surgery. I think some of it is the extra warmth from my body is comforting. Riley was up the next day wanted to run on his wheel after his eye surgery. He couldn't have it, but it didn't stop him from throwing a fit that it was not in his cage.

Good luck with him.

Well his surgery went great and I just picked him up.. he is running around his cage and on his wheel Like a nut but I guess that's the aftermath of the anestesia? Hope he calms down and rests soon.

Yes, the running around like crazy can be a reaction to the anesthesia, it happened to Clémentine once, after being put under for x-rays. I`m glad the surgery went well.
