Smile How to Raise my Hedgie?

Hi! I just signed up.
So, I got my new hedgie a few days ago, but I still don't know how to take care of him. He came from another family who had to give him up and he's healthy I think, but I still don't know how to take care of him. If you can help, Please do! I really love him.

1. You need a proper set-up. This is critical. If you go ahead and invest in the right cage, heat options, bedding, etc, life with your hedgie will be much easier. The basics: well ventilated cage with a lid and solid plastic bottom that has at least 4 square feet of floor space and can be maintained at a consistent temperature of 72-78 degrees fahrenheit with the proper equipment; some type of bedding (I recommend fleece); food & water dishes; a hide.

2. Read this free book written by one of our forum members. It'll cover the basics plus some.

3. Read the pinned topics (aka stickies) in each of our forum sections. By that time, you'll have more than covered the basics.

4. Start saving for a vet fund. Hedgie owners always need it. And start researching what vet you'll use for routine care and emergencies.

5. Bond with your hedgie every day. This is non-negotiable. If you do not handle and/or interact with your hedgie every single day for at least half an hour, you will end up with an anti-social hedgie. Even if you do, it may take awhile to bond. Be patient and persistent.

6. Harness the magic of the t-shirt. To facilitate bonding, sleep in a t-shirt for a couple of nights, and then, before laundering it, put it in the cage with your hedgie. It will help familiarize him with your scent and help him associate it with safety.
