Default Litter box use

I am a new Hedgie owner - I have had him for about a week. Hedgie is about a year old. The person I purchased him from told me he used his litter box all the time except when using his wheel. Hedgie has yet to use his litterbox since I got him home. I have his old cage and I put his litter box in the same spot. When I noticed he was going behind his Igloo all the time, I rearranged and put his litter box where he had been going all the time. This still hasn't helped. How do I encourage him to use the litter box instead of just going where ever he feels like it? It makes for a very unsanitary cage if I don't catch it right away to clean it.

I managed to get my little guy re-trained to use the litter box when he's on the couch with me (he forgot how to use it once he got his wheel since that's where he goes when he's in his pen). When he raises his butt and looks like he getting ready to answer nature's call - or if I'm late and catch him in the middle of, or just right after, I plop him down in the litter tray. When he's done, I give him a treat. In this case I just use his favourite food. It's magically a "treat" if I offer it to him with my hand. Not sure how that works in his little mind, but whatever makes him happy. If you start showing him where it is when it's time to go, and bribe him to use it, he may eventually remember what the thing was for.

What Nebular said is a good idea. Also, are you using the same litter as the previous owner? Sometimes it takes them a bit to get used to their surrounding before they start using the litter boxes. Could be another week or so. Also try putting his poops in the box, this may help encourage him to go in it.
