Default Relocation to Arizona

Hey all,

I'm really sad about this. I'm going to be relocating to Arizona, but I have a hedgehog... and the regulations surrounding hedgehogs are so restrictive that it's virtually impossible for even zoos to house hedgehogs in Arizona. There's no way around my relocation.

Here are my biggest worries:
1. legal issues
2. the 14-hour drive to Arizona if I were to potentially... take her
3. no listing of veterinarians for hedgehogs in Arizona, so if she were to get sick, it wouldn't be treated. Also, no way for her to have checkups.

I'm really sad right now...

In your opinion, what would be the best thing that I can do for her? Should I send her back to the breeder, or should I do everything that I can to keep her, with the relocation in mind?

Arizona is potentially legalizing hedgehogs in the near future. This has been in the works for quite a while so hopefully it will come to pass sooner than later. How soon are you relocating?

Will she be okay in a 14 hour drive?

Any state that lists an animal as illegal keeps the option of confiscating your animal and euthanising it. Beyond the things you listed, is that a risk you're willing to take? When you have already stated you have somewhere sage she can go?

IMO, the best thing for her is to go back to the breeder. Several of the states where hedgehogs are illegal have supposedly been close to passing laws to make them legal recently, but nothing's been done fast. As Soyala said, if you take her, you risk having her confiscated or going without vet care until the laws are passed, which could take months yet, or not even happen. At least if she goes back to the breeder, it's an environment she has been in before, and you can be sure your breeder will make sure she goes to another good home, even if she can't be with you.

Please don't take your hedgehog to Arizona. It isn't fair to him to be put into a situation where he could be confiscated and euthanized. Please put his best interests first.

It's unlikely that the law will come to pass within that time frame. The other respondents are correct in that attempting to bring your hedgehog into the state while it is illegal is a potential death sentence for your hedgie in respects to possibly being confiscated or becoming ill and not having a proper medical source. You could attempt to have someone foster your hedgehog until they become legalized, but like I mentioned earlier, there's no set date for the legalization or that it will actually come to pass. Hopefully it will. keep in mind though that when and if they become legalized, it may take a while for the emergence of vet care.
