Unhappy Allergic to hedgehog?

Is it more likely to be allergic to a hedgehog or it's environment? Every time I pull her out, I become a red eyed, runny nose, sore throat mess and it's making me sad.

I've taken to taking allergy meds before taking her out just so I don't start sneezing all over her.

She's currently in with a fleece liner and a paper bedding (I don't know what the brand is) lined wheel area.

Any ideas? :/ Thanks in advance.

It's probably something in the bedding.

Allergies to hedgehogs are fairly uncommon because they produce little dander (the usual culprit with most animals). I'd cut out the bedding altogether and see if that helps.

Of course, uncommon doesn't mean non-existent, so it is possible you're allergic to her. It's just more probable that you're reacting to her bedding (the most common culprit) or something else in her habitat. If you can't find a cause within her habitat and need to continue medication, make sure you use an antihistamine half an hour before your routine bonding time, avoid touching your face during bonding time, and wash your hands immediately afterward to minimize your reaction.

There are many people that become allergic to hedgehogs. Some just have a skin rash others can have serious respiratory issues from it.

She loves the fleece and I know that isn't the culprit (freshly laundered and I use the same allergen/scent free detergent I use on my stuff). I'll see about cutting out the litter area and see if that helps.

Oh, no. I would be unfortunate enough to become allergic to hedgehogs. I've had Kit for about a year and a half now, she turns 2 in July.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I'll tread carefully and work on finding out if I'm allergic to *her* or her bedding.

You might want to talk to Nancy and Kalandra I believe they both developed allergies to their hedgehogs.
