Default Pirate is home! Wheel and igloo questions

Hi all- just got my first little guy, Pirate, yesterday! It may be too soon to tell, but he did not use either his wheel or igloo last night. He hid/slept under the wheel, and I feel bad because his igloo would provide much more room. Can I place him on the wheel? or is it something they figure out for themselves? He is pretty brave, he uncurled and crawled around on my lap last night. Movements startle him, so I don't want to spin the wheel slowly or something and scare him more, especially since he slept there. I'm anxious and probably just an overstressing new mama, but still, any help about the wheel and igloo usage would be appreciated!

Congratulations on Pirate!!
I wouldn't worry yet. Give him a few days to figure the wheel out for himself. I would also put just a little bit of flour on the wheel so you can tell when he uses is. Some hedgies, like my Zoey will keep a very clean wheel, so you can't tell if they've actually used it or not.

Hi and congratulations on Pirate!

When I first brought my Nara home, my breeder said to leave the wheel out for a few days to make sure she was eating and pooping OK first.

Does your igloo have fleece blankies or a hedgie bag inside? Nara won't use an igloo because you can see her, she likes to burrow in her blankies and hedgie bag to sleep.

You will soon learn what Pirate likes and dislikes! They have a way of letting us know.

Have fun and enjoy your little one!

Donna

Give it some time . Pirate might just be a little scared right now. Under the wheel feels like a safe place for them. When I first got Bulu, I put her in her tupperware bin, then went downstairs to see the breeder out (they delivered her). When I came back upstairs, she was missing, and I panicked. Apparently she shoved herself under her litter pan.

Even now, sometimes she'll go behind her wheel to feel even safer.
I'm sure Pirate will eventually settle into what he likes.

Congrats on Pirate!
