Well I am not an expert but I can tell you how I pick up a new hedgehog. I use a piece of fleece that I have in their hides hut. I put it over them and gently pick them up that way I don't get poked to much and it seems to not to stress them out too much.

I also put a shirt I was wearing or piece of fabric with my scent on it in where they sleep so they can get get used to my scent. It helps to let them know I am friendly, also try to get them out in the evening to spend at least 30 minutes of bonding time.since they are nocturnal they are up at night and sleep all day it works out better that way.

I hope that helps and someone that knows more then I do will be able to help more

It seems counterintuitive, but you just have to do it. If you're all freaked out and scared of getting pricked, she'll pick up on it and get even more scared. If you have to, use something to cover your hands (a blanket, towel) so the quills don't hurt as much.

The first day I had my hedgehog, I was so scared that every time he hissed I'd pull away. Of course that meant I'd have to try five or six times, and that only stressed both of us out. Now I just grab him with a blanket he has in his cage and he'll unroll within ten seconds or so.

Also, it's completely normal for a hedgehog to sleep all day. They're nocturnal animals.
