Default Year old hedgehog problems

Hi, I got a hedgehog about 4 months ago. It is currently one year old but is still incredibly shy, it goes into a ball and jumps whenever we try and handle it. I try and handle it everyday for about 30 minutes just holding him and I let him walk around the room for an hour everyday which he seems to enjoy. He is eatting properly and enjoys running on his wheel etc but he will never let anyone go near him or he goes straight into the ball, when I try and pick him up with a towel he just bites and won't let go, same if I try and do it without. Any suggestions?

Try putting an old shirt of yours (one that smells like you, so go to the gym or something and then stick it in after ) so that he gets used to your scent

Another thing you can try is bribing him with kibbles or treats

You could also give him a hiding place so that he feels safer, like a cuddle sack. You can place that on your lap and if he feels comfortable he can come out and have a look around.

A lot of positive reinforcement and he should start being a bit friendlier

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the word, but for the past week and a half I've had Luna ... I've done the shirt trick that shae suggested, coupled with handling her in a dim environment, coupled with coaxing her with meal worms as treats (she looooves meal worms) and she's made significant improvement. She's still shy, but she comes out of her ball faster, is less spooked if I make a movement (including my hands) and even anointed herself after smelling my shorts, haha!

I also talk to her the entire time. I feel like if she gets used to my voice, it'll be easy to prevent her from curling up in a ball when I go to take her out. It hasn't proved effective yet, but it coaxes her out when I say the word 'pretty' or 'beautiful'!

Good luck ^__^!
