Default Bringing baby home today :)

After weeks of preparation and angst, I am finally going to pick up my baby today! She will be 7 weeks tomorrow. I haven't even seen a picture yet, so I am extremely excited.

Now I know that it may take her a looong time to completely settle in and start trusting me, but when do I start the "bonding process"? I plan on giving her a couple days to just figure out the new routine and calm down. I will give her the chance to smell me when I change her water and food, clean wheel, etc. When do you guys think it's OK (by OK I mean a little less stressful for her) to spend some one-on-one time with her out of the cage?

I started both of my boys with bonding time on day two. So I brought them home in the day, and that night I let them settle how they wanted. Then the next night was bonding time, staring with just letting them sleep in their snuggle sacks either on my lap or next to me. So that's my experience.

Congratulations on getting your hedgie!! I just got mine, so I can't give any great advice based on any sort of experience with hedgehogs but I have more than my fair share of experience handling flat out agressive snakes and getting them to come around. Sometimes only in the sense that they only attacked me when I least expected it! I digress, but I think you should kind of gauge what yours is ready for by her reaction to you. Mine really was terrified of me for the first two days, so I let her be. Now I've introduced her to mealworms and now she kind of looks at me as if she's more curious. She still hisses and stabs me with her quills, but I know it will take time. Don't get discouraged by the spiky death!!

Hedgie is doing great. She was very curious and friendly when we picked her up from the breeder. She rode in the car well, no messes or anything. She balled up when I first took her out of the cat carrier when we got home, but she unballed when I put her down on the bed while I was putting water in her cage. She is extremely curious, crawling all over everything in the cage. She seems like an explorer! I'm letting her do her thing for the night, but checking her food bowl and cage temp periodically. The breeder said she is a pinto, but I'm not sure... Will post pictures tonight.

Thanks, guys! She is so. darn. cute. It was almost impossible for me to leave her alone last night! I had to take her out once to try to get her wheel adjusted and she pooped a lot (on my fingers, especially ) but didn't ball up at all!

She has decided that she wants nothing to do with her igloo or her snuggie - she spends most of her time under the fleece liners. I'll take her out tonight and see if she will at least try her snuggie, haha!

Your hedgie sounds so playful! That's awesome! Did you decide on a name for her yet?

From what I've seen of her so far, I think she will definitely be more of an explorer/"leave-me-the-****-alone-while-I-look-around" type hedgehog. Who knows, though. She's so young, things could change a lot as she gets used to her new home and owners. She hasn't been so much playful as just really interested in her new surroundings. I called my fiance to ask what our little girl is up to and he said she's been under her fleece liner since I left (4 hours ago). I hope that's normal!

No name yet, though. I have a short list of what I like - Mildred, Lilah, Basil, Amelia, and Olive. Now it just comes down to agreeing with my fiance about one, and seeing which one fits her best
