Like what you found, most people use either scent/dye free detergent, or vinegar to wash liners. Personally I always used Tide Free and Downy Free (if that was the name, it was the white bottle, scent/dye free) for softener. Some people opt out of softener at all, but I used a little of it (just less than I'd normally use for the load size) to keep the fleece from getting static-y. It's already good enough at collecting hairs, doesn't need any help!
I have always washed my liners in unscented laundry detergent with no fabric softener or dryer sheets used.
