Default Something green...

Hi! I'm a brand new hedgehog mama. Gus was born November 9 and fame home December 21. He is still a bit huffy and puffy and doesn't always want to uncurl and visit with me, but he's starting to come out of his shell and has recently decided that he loves his wheel. Every morning I check for poop on the wheel, check his cage temp, and check on him. So far, so good. This morning, though, there was something green on his (white) wheel. No sign of a solid green poop anywhere, and no green pee dribbled down into his litter bin directly below the wheel (it has white bedding so I can make sure everything is normal). Could it be vomit? When I checked on him, he was his regular huffy-morning self.

The fact that he continued to run and track green prints makes me hope he's okay, but as I have never had a hedgehog, I want to make sure I know what my next steps are. Thanks so much for any help you can give this stressed hedgie mama!

I wanted to add that he wasn't given any supplemental treats yesterday (he had some mealworms the day before). Just his regular food (the same as the breeder was giving him) and his fresh water.

When hedgehogs poop green it often doesn't look normal in shape or texture. The greenish liquid was likely just runny green poop. Has he had a normal bowel movement since then?

Since there have been no recent changes in his diet, the most likely causes of Gus's digestive troubles would be stress or illness. If he's eating, running, and drinking normally (which sounds like the case) then I'm sure he isn't sick. Even the slightest routine changes can set a hedgie off and make them poop green. It's perfectly normal that a healthy hedgehog has the occasional bout of discolouration, and it's generally not anything to be concerned about. Speaking from experiece, I can tell you that it's very likely nothing to get too worried about.

However, if Gus's behaviour changes in any way or the green poops continue I would recommend that you take him to see a vet just to make sure nothing internal's going on.

Thank you! He's had multiple normal poops since then, and has continued to eat and drink and run as normal!

Stress level down!
